Who can resist jazz and cocktails on a Friday night? Between the great wars, composers found new avenues of experimentation and influences for their music, including the jazz they heard in cafes and concert halls in Paris and New York. The Curtis 20/21 ensemble, presented by LiveConnections, partners with acclaimed jazz vocalist Joanna Pascale. The program features the world premiere of a new vocal work by the Curtis Institute of Music’s ArtistYear Fellow Gabriella Smith and the mellifluous songs of Michele Legrand, as well as seminal works by Gershwin, Milhaud and Varese.

Icon Magazine has called Joanna Pascale’s voice "the stuff of dreams" and All That Jazz praised her as “a durable and pliant alto voice over which she has perfect control.”

LiveConnections curates and presents six concerts annually, showcasing collaborative music designed for adventurous music-lovers. Join us for dinner and some of the most engaging new music around!

Lyric is paramount for Philadelphia-based vocalist Joanna Pascale, who insists that she cannot perform a song unless she can connect personally with its lyrics. But once she’s found that connection, there’s no one who can better convey the emotion of those words more directly and intimately than Pascale. A singer of sophisticated taste, profound expressiveness, and raw emotion, Pascale is also a gifted educator who is a member of the vocal faculty at both Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. She’s been featured on recordings by Jeremy Pelt, Tim Warfield, Orrin Evans, Larry McKenna, the Temple University Jazz Band, and Garry Dial and Dick Oatts. Pascale made her recording debut with 2004’s When Lights Are Low, followed by the 2008 CD Through My Eyes and a 2010 duo recording with pianist Anthony Wonsey. With the 2015 release of Wildflower, she revealed her most personal and diverse collection to date. She received a 2016-2017 jazz residency with the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts. Flexible in size and scope, the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble performs a wide range of music from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Curtis students and alumni. Led by artistic director David Ludwig, the ensemble has appeared at major U.S. venues such as the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and Miller Theatre, as well as internationally. The Curtis 20/21 Ensemble collaborates with some of today’s most prominent artists, including Charles Dutoit, eighth blackbird and Matthias Pintscher. It has presented portrait concerts of iconic composers in residence John Corigliano, George Crumb, Krzysztof Penderecki and Steven Stucky, among others. Of the ensemble’s Joan Tower portrait program, The New York Times wrote, “Ms. Tower could hardly have hoped for more passionate performances.” For more information about Curtis 20/21, visit https://www.curtis.edu/performances/learn-more/curtis-20-21.html.
