Ben Arnold
Ben Arnold
Ben Arnold has an effectively grizzled, cobwebbed voice and a jones for stories linking underdogs to top dogs. As a singer, the Philadelphia resident slid, stabbed and pleaded. As a pianist, he bounded, shadowboxed and threatened to break into boogie woogie… Arnold looks like Rick Danko, sings somewhere between Levon Helm and Richard Manuel, rollicks like Garth Hudson and testifies like Robbie Robertson.”
Jeffrey Gaines
Jeffrey Gaines
Singer/songwriter and guitarist Jeffrey Gaines brought a unique, original voice to the sea of singer/songwriters that emerged in the 1990s. Born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Gaines studied drawing and painting as a child, but became interested in singing while in his teens, joining local cover bands and taking his cue from the recordings of musicians like John Lennon, David Bowie, Paul Weller, Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. After high school, Gaines was offered the singer slot for a New York rock & roll band, but turned it down to move to Philadelphia, where he signed with Chrysalis Records in 1990. His self-titled 1992 debut, featuring The Band's Garth Hudson on saxophone, organ and accordion, drew critical praise from far and wide, and put him on the musical map as a sensitive folk-rock artist. Somewhat Slightly Dazed followed in 1994, and in 1998 Gaines returned with Galore. Always Be marked Gaines first release for the new millennium.
Willie Nile
Willie Nile
Willie Nile is a Buffalo raised American singer-songwriter. In 1980 Nile released his self-titled debut album which according to one critic remains “one of the most thrilling post-Byrds folk-rock albums of all time”. After various career interruptions he eventually returned to recording and performing in the US and Europe, establishing himself as a respected singer-songwriter. Many have said “Streets of New York” (2006), “House of a Thousand Guitars” (2009) and “The Innocent Ones” that included the blazing anthem One Guitar (2010); stand as “three of the finest albums to ever straddle the worlds of “singer/songwriter” fare and good ol’ street-tough rock ‘n’ roll”.
Chuck Prophet
Chuck Prophet
Night Surfer was recorded in Prophet's hometown of San Francisco at Decibelle Recording Studio and in Nashville at Alex the Great with noted producer Brad Jones and was mixed in upstate New York by Paul Q Kolderie. Of the album, Prophet comments, "This record is loosely conceptual but universal all the same. It's all about a path forward, about looking around and imagining where we'll be in 20 years if we just follow that path. And of course, you'll find a persistent anxiety throughout; we live, after all, in anxious times. As John Murry told me after a first listen, 'It brings a tear to the eye and blood to the johnson.'" So yeah, a new record, new sound. It's got it's own groove with in your face guitars that snake and harmonize. They jangle too, thanks in no small part to special guest Peter Buck." The new record follows Prophet's widely praised 2012 release, Temple Beautiful, of which Paste Magazine asserted, "Not since Lou Reed paid homage to the city and era that forged him with New York has there been a song cycle dedicated to a place and reality that offers the core immediacy with the thump, churn and ferocity of Chuck Prophet's Temple Beautiful." Since emerging onto the music scene at age 18 as a member of the seminal rock band Green on Red, Prophet has collaborated with everyone from Warren Zevon and Kelly Willis to Jim Dickinson and Lucinda Williams among many others. In recent years, Prophet's music has been featured in several hit television series including HBO's "True Blood," Showtime's "Californication," and FX's "Sons of Anarchy." He also co-wrote all the songs on Alejandro Escovedo's 2008 critically acclaimed album Real Animal.
