Dan Zanes
Dan Zanes
Grammy award winner Dan Zanes occupies a unique place in American music where sea shanties, North American and West Indian folk music, play party songs, English music hall, the spirit of early rock-and-roll and soulful originals collide. With his band, Dan Zanes and Friends, he has toured the world sharing handmade 21st century social music with enthusiastic crowds of kids and kid sympathizers.

Dan Zanes has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Lou Reed, Rosanne Cash, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Carol Channing, Angelique Kidjo, and Philip Glass. Lately, Zanes has been traveling light touring the country with his Song Gusto Hour solo singalong show as well as his live film score to Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill, Jr.

From thrift shop basements to Carnegie hall, from Brooklyn to Bahrain and beyond, Zanes has been introducing new songs and reconnecting people to songs that have always been there, and still are—although people may have forgotten about them. Referred to as “the family-music genre’s most outspoken and eloquent advocate” by TimeMagazine, his widely- acclaimed music has been featured on Sesame Street, Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon, HBO Family and Sprout. In 2011, he partnered with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and after three years of intensive research launched Dan Zanes House Party: Songs and Stories from Americas Neighborhoods. This innovative early childhood music education program uses Dan's songs in combination with the music and stories of our multicultural country to teach children and caregivers how to bring the joys of casual music-making into their everyday lives.

Zanes was born in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1961. He wasted his youth with Boston-based garage band The Del Fuegos. The group made four albums and toured extensively through the U.S. and Europe before disbanding by the 80's end. In 1994, Zanes released his only solo CD, a critically acclaimed flop entitled Cool Down Time. That same year he moved to Brooklyn, New York with his family and as a way of entertaining his daughter and her friends began to create what he started calling "My updated version of the Folkways records I grew up on" A cassette tape of this all-ages folk music recorded for kids in the neighborhood became the first release on his newly formed Festival Five label. Rocket Ship Beach (2000) became an immediate hit with families around America as well as with The New York Times Magazine, which said, “Zanes’ kids music works because it is not kids music; it’s just music—music that’s unsanitized, unpasteurized, that’s organic even.” Since that low-key family music debut, Zanes has released 13 more CDs, 2 DVDs, 2 picture books, and almost a dozen videos.
