Kaylé Brecher: 'This is Life' CD Release Celebration

'This is Life' - an intimate, fun journey exploring the ripe possibilities within improvised music: a genre bending set from bold vocalist/composer Kaylé Brecher (Kay-La BrecKer) with an exciting group of musicians placed in creatively varied combinations. Intimacy is something that Kaylé has honed over a lifetime of performance, building an uncommon gift for achieving it within the recorded setting as effectively as onstage. Her skill at interpreting material and offering it up in new light is refreshing, as is her knack for making every syllable meaningful.

“Ms. Brecher displays a highly expressive voice with a wide range, a deep understanding of the lyrics and a joyful scatting style.” - Scott Yanow, jazz critic and author

“In all these settings the warmth and life in Kaylé Brecher's voice stands out...a talented and fearless vocalist” - Jerome Wilson, All About Jazz

"Her haunting voice produces goose bumps...elegant and heady vocals" - Hrayr Attarian, All About Jazz

Imaginative, versatile and eclectic, Kaylé began her career as a very young teen, singing blues and standards in the clubs of Greenwich Village. She has performed in settings ranging from traditional jazz through bop, free jazz and experimental music, country through folk, gospel, rock, blues and beyond. Her varied and active career has included concerts, festivals, live radio performances, a TV documentary soundtrack, clubs and other fine venues, studio production work and seven recordings. She is a singer who is at once completely distinctive and an amalgamation of her great musical influences. Hers is a versatile and flexible instrument with wide range, moving from silky and subtle to bold and bluesy; refined to brash and raw. Kaylé's instrumental and compositional approach to singing leads to explorations of mood, texture and style in each tune, which results in exciting variety.
A skilled arranger and composer, she combines her expressive vocals and wide range with artful writing and creative arranging to present her audiences with unique inventive settings, vivid subtlety, masterful phrasing and sophisticated lyrics. Three of her original compositions and two of her versions of Freddie Hubbard tunes have been published by Freddie Hubbard's publishing company Hubtones and two of her versions of Herbie Hancock tunes have been published by Hancock Music. Her compositional skills have also garnered several awards in the jazz category of the Billboard Song Contest, including one major prize.
"A serious jazz triple threat with mad skills and the ability to take her creative energy anywhere she wants to go. The real deal." - Brent Black, Critical Jazz

"Brecher's skills are many and varied, but her greatest strength may be her ability to balance the offbeat with the accessible" -Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

“Among contemporary vocalists Kaylé Brecher ranks in the top echelon” -Harvey Pekar, jazz critic and author

The musicians:

- Bassist/composer/author Ratzo Harris is very well-known in jazz circles for his virtuosity and creative playing, his work alongside Kenny Werner, Mose Allison, Roseanna Vitro and Jane Ira Bloom and as a sought after bassist with a long list of notable performances around the world.

- Improvisational powerhouse drummer Grant Calvin Weston always adds and explosive bed of solid groove infused with creativity. His world class resume includes Ornette Coleman, The Lounge Lizards, James Blood Ulmer, John Medeski, The World Saxophone Quartet, Vernon Reid, John Zorn, and too many others to mention here.

-Guitarist/composer Frank Butrey is a well-respected Philadelphia based musician with whom Brecher has played for many years. Butrey is prominently featured on all six of Kaylé Brecher's CDs including her latest 'This is Life'.
